Many people who purchase new furniture are disappointed when they get a nick or scratch and they can’t get a marker to stick to the finish. The reason is that the newest finishes that are put on furniture use sanding sealer prior to putting on the topcoat. Once the topcoat has been nicked off a marker will not stick to it. You could come back three weeks after putting it on and it will simply wipe off. The Exact match Wood Touch Up system was designed specifically to solve this problem and will give an exact color match and stick to the repaired area.
Many times it will be more durable than the original finish.

Keeping your dogs nails trimmed can save your hardwood floors. Large dogs do the most damage but even small dogs can scratch up softer woods. The best nail grooming devices actually sand the nails and are battery operated. They are sold online, on TV and pet stores.  Properly used when you are done sanding the nail, the nail is rounded off. This is far less likely to tear up your floor. Keep them trimmed and your floor can look great for many years. If a deep scratch does occur there are remedies. In a future blog we are going to cover the entire repair of a deep scratch on a wood floor using the Exact Match Deluxe Plus system. We will be covering this one in depth and will be including video of an actual repair as well. Thanks for reading our Exact Match Quick Tips.

Have you ever dusted off an old antique or dresser that was sitting in you basement for years? I’m sure most people have and the question is posed. How do I renew the finish to make it look great again.

If the overall finish is in good shape and it’s simply dusty or has a few scratches and dried out here’s how.

First you’ll want to clean the piece. Get a bucket of warm water and a little dish soap. Wipe the piece down with a wetted cotton rag and immediately dry it off.
Once the piece is clean, let it sit overnight or at least for a few hours and then do your repairs.

Use your Exact Match Wood Touch Up system and dress up your piece. Once finished you on to the next step. Feeding and protecting the wood.

We do not recommend aerosols or anything with silicone in it. Use a natural product such as Exact Match Luster Restore or something similar with natural waxes and oils.
Put a heavy coating on the piece and let it sit overnight. The following day wipe off the excess and be amazed at how great your old dusty relic looks.

Problem: When kids are gaming they tend to sit on the edge of the seat cushions thereby smashing the foam inside. Over time this will lead to an uneven seating surface. If you rotate the cushions periodically or especially when the kids are gaming, your furniture will look and perform much better over time.

Let’s define the problem. If you use a leather couch, chair or even the leather seats in your car for any amount of time eventually you will wear out or I should say wear off the finish. In some cases this distressed look is nice to have but for most people having worn off the color of you auto interior just looks bad. It could be something as simple as a scratch from something in your back pocket or maybe you were hauling something in you car from the hardware store but the leather is scratched and the finish has come off.
This is a fairly easy repair similar to how we would perform a wood repair where the finish is missing. Your first step is to give the spot a little cleaning. Even a dry cotton rag rubbed vigorously will do the trick. The main thing is you don’t want to put on a new finish color over dirt or grime.
The next step is to grab the Exact Match system and pick the best color card. Once picked, activate the stain with a few drops of activator and touch it up.

Because leather usually has some texture to it a dabbing or stabbing technique with the brush is most effective. Once the area has had all of the color replaced take your brush and smooth it to it’s original point with a paper towel. This way it will be ready for any new wood or leather repair you may have.

The Exact Match system will be a durable repair that matches the color and can last for years.

The last step is to topcoat the leather with a good conditioner. We are working on a formula that will be equally as good as our Luster Restore wood polish but for now Lexol is a good product to use.

Exact Match Wood care tips

Many people think of wood furniture care as dusting once every week or so and polishing once or twice a year. There is a little more to it than that and these few steps will insure your furniture will last longer and look better doing it.

You should do an annual cleaning of all wood surfaces in your home.

Here’s how:

Mix a bucket of warm water and some dish soap. Whip it up until there are plenty of suds. Scoop up the suds and apply them to the wood surface. Work in with a cotton cloth and wipe with a dry towel. You don’t want the soap suds to sit for long so do sections at a time and quickly dry that section. This will get gently the grime off of the wood.

The next step is to “feed the wood”.
We recommend using a non silicone based polish specifically one with natural oils and waxes such as orange oil, beeswax, and carnuba wax. We use this combination in our Luster Restore product and it basically waterproofs the wood and feeds with the natural oils at the same time. Using products such as Luster Restore four times a year will insure your woods don’t dry out. It will also keep the wood looking great as well as protecting it from every day water spills and sweating glasses.  On kitchen tables more frequent use is recommend just because it is requires a higher level of protection.

Taking these steps will insure you get the most out of your wood furniture.

Antiques are so interesting for many reasons. Who sat in this chair? What craftsman made this piece? What families used this table? How old is it?   Where was it made and when was it made?  I once had an opportunity to sit in on Mary Tod Lincoln’s birthing chair. It’s amazing how this chair brought President Lincoln’s children into the world.

It is said a millions times to people. Don’t refinish your antiques!!! Repair them and perform spot touch ups. This will not only preserve the value but increase it. Many people choose to use a professional for this service, however this is frequently something that can be done by the average person.

Exact Match Wood Touch Up was designed with the average person’s skills in mind. If you have missing finish, nicks or scratches, gouges, broken corners, broken legs, cracks from dryness and many other problems, check us out. At www.exactmatchwoodtouchup.com you will find a simple to use solution to your antique repair problems.

The problem: Sometimes over time a screw will strip the surrounding wood so that it can no longer be tightened. This is common in older homes on door hinges, strike plates locks, etc. It is also very common on certain parts of antiques. The most common method is to use a larger or longer screw. This isn’t practical in many cases and certainly not the best practice with antiques. The best way involves using a special type of wood epoxy. Here’s the fix: Take out the stripped screw. Cut a small sliver of epoxy out of the Exact Match Wood Epoxy tube and knead it for a minute. This will activate the epoxy. Roll the epoxy out like a piece of spaghetti and make it about the thickness of the screw hole. Carefully shove the thin piece of mixed Exact Match Wood Epoxy into the hole. Put in as much as will fit and screw in your screw. Push in the screw as you turn it so that you don’t pull the epoxy out. Once you get the screw in almost all of the way in, stop turning it and wipe off the excess around the screw head. Allow the epoxy to harden for an hour and tighten the screw all of the way in. This will fix your problem for good without mucking things up with a bigger or longer screw. You will be able to tighten the screw very tight without a problem. The epoxy will hold onto the screw but will easily release it if you need to get the screw out in the future. That is the best way to permanently repair a stripped out screw hole.
